In 2003, Marieke started her Bachelor in Health Sciences at the VU University in Amsterdam. During her study, she focused on the fields of aging, prevention and epidemiology. During her studies, Marieke completed her scientific internships at the Netherlands Institute for Health Promotion (NIGZ), and three departments of the VU medical center of the EMGO+ Institute: the depts. of General Practice, Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery, section Ear & Hearing, and the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA). In 2008, she received her Master’s degree in Public Health Research and Epidemiology.

After her study, Marieke continued working at the departments of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Sugery, section Ear and Hearing and of LASA of the VU Medical Center as a PhD student. She investigated the longitudinal associations between hearing status and psychosocial health in older persons. Other topics that she addressed in here thesis were functioning and disability with hearing loss, and interventions following hearing screening in adults. On 25 October 2013, she succesfully defended her thesis and earned her PhD title.

Currently, Marieke is working as a postoc at the department of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Sugery, section Ear & Hearing of the VU medical center, and is also involved as a researcher in the LASA study. The aim of her current project is to identify the predictors of help seeking and hearing aid uptake in older persons with hearing problems. The study is called 'PredictOOR' (or 'PredictEAR' in English), and concerns one cross-sectional study (the Help Seeking Study) and one prospective study (the Hearing Aid Uptake Study), both of which are observational in nature and have a patient-control set-up. Visit the PredictOOR project page here.
